Longwood Gardens’ Illuminated Fountain Performances bring the Main Fountain Garden to life after dark with choreographed water, colored light, and music. The five-acre fountain garden in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, contains 1,719 jets, with water effects capable of reaching as high as 175 feet. Nighttime programs change by date, so the performance theme and soundtrack can be different even when the venue stays the same.
Current Fountain Schedule
From August 28 through November 1, Friday through Sunday, one performance is scheduled at 8:15 PM.
How the Illuminated Fountain Performance Works
The performance takes place in the Main Fountain Garden, where water movement is synchronized with music and programmed lighting. The fountain system can produce tall vertical jets, low sweeping patterns, arcs, rotating effects, and changing formations across the garden rather than relying on a single central spray.

Setting
Main Fountain Garden
Longwood uses named programs rather than one soundtrack throughout the season. Individual dates may feature pop, rock, classical, film-inspired, dance, or holiday-themed selections, with the fountain choreography matched to the music. The published program calendar identifies which show is scheduled for a particular night, while Longwood’s playlist collection lists the music used in many performances.
A performance lasts about 30 minutes.
Daytime Main Fountain Garden performances should not be confused with the full Illuminated Fountain Performance. The fountains also operate during daylight hours, but the nighttime program adds the lighting component that defines the illuminated show.
Illuminated Show vs. Fireworks Night
An ordinary Illuminated Fountain Performance and a Fireworks & Fountains Show are separate event formats. Fireworks dates use their own ticketing and access arrangements, so a fireworks event should not be treated as a standard fountain-performance night.
Where to Watch in the Main Fountain Garden
The performance is designed on a large scale, so a position with a broad view across the Main Fountain Garden makes it easier to follow patterns spreading from one side of the fountain complex to the other. Standing close can emphasize individual jets and water effects, while a little distance gives more room to see the choreography as a whole.
Lawn seating is available around the Main Fountain Garden for Illuminated Fountain Performances. Longwood also permits personal chairs and blankets under its event-specific rules, with blankets restricted to designated locations. Because placement rules can differ by event type, the Gardens’ current visiting guidelines are the appropriate reference before bringing seating equipment.
An optional reserved-seating area may also be offered on the Conservatory Overlook. This is an add-on rather than the only way to watch the performance; general viewing remains available within the Main Fountain Garden according to the admission conditions for that date.
The changing height of the water matters when choosing a position. Some effects stay low across the fountain basins, while others rise well above the garden architecture. A view that is not blocked by people, umbrellas, or nearby structures gives the clearest look at both layers.
Outdoor Performance Conditions
Fountain performances may be canceled because of severe weather.
Planning the Evening at Longwood Gardens
Longwood Gardens is at 1001 Longwood Road, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. The fountain garden is inside the wider Gardens property, so seeing the show involves entering Longwood rather than arriving at a separate fountain-only venue.
The listed admission information is Included with Gardens admission; timed admission/reservations may be required.
The show is scheduled from 2026 illuminated season: August 28 through November 1.
The Gardens use timed admission during applicable periods, and member reservation requirements can vary by day and arrival time. Specially ticketed performances can also change normal closing or entry arrangements. This is especially relevant when an Illuminated Fountain Performance, Fireworks & Fountains event, concert, or another evening program appears on the same date.
Parking and Arrival
Longwood has a main visitor parking area, while off-site parking may be used during busy periods. When an off-site lot is in operation, Longwood provides transportation between that parking area and the Visitor Center entrance. Traffic can become heavier on popular evening and special-event dates, so arriving with enough time to enter the Gardens and walk to the Main Fountain Garden avoids making the fountain start time your arrival deadline.
Accessible parking is available in the front rows of the main on-site lot and, when used, in the front rows of the off-site lot. Passenger drop-off is also available at the Visitor Center entrance. Wheelchairs and mobility scooters are offered from the Visitor Center on a first-come basis, subject to Longwood’s operating conditions.
Allow Time Beyond the Fountain Show
The Main Fountain Garden covers about five acres, and the fountain performance is only one part of Longwood Gardens. An evening arrival can include time for the garden itself before the nighttime program, rather than treating the visit like a theater performance where arriving moments before the start is enough.
