The Karnak Temple Sound & Light Show turns an evening at Luxor’s East Bank into a narrated walk through the temple complex, using illumination, music, and storytelling to connect the surviving monuments with the history of ancient Thebes. Unlike a show viewed entirely from one fixed position, the presentation is built around moving through parts of Karnak after dark.
Karnak Show Schedule
Daily, performances are scheduled at 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM.
How the Night Program Is Scheduled
Karnak’s program is arranged as scheduled evening performances rather than continuous illumination that can be entered at any time. The exact performance time therefore matters when planning a visit, especially if the show is being combined with dinner, a Nile cruise schedule, or another evening activity in Luxor.
The official operator advertises narration options across 10 languages. The language assigned to a particular performance can vary, so the time and language should be considered together when selecting a booking. An English performance may appear separately from sessions offered in another language or with broader language options.
The live schedule should be used for the current performance pattern rather than relying on an older Luxor itinerary or a previously published timetable. Show listings are subject to change.
A Show That Moves Through the Temple
The presentation uses Karnak itself as the setting. Egypt’s official tourism information describes the experience as a walk through the temple accompanied by music and a narrated account of Thebes and its pharaohs. Lighting draws attention to stone architecture, inscriptions, columns, and other parts of the complex as the historical story develops.
This makes the format different from watching a projection on one screen or façade. Part of the experience comes from seeing the scale of the ancient structures after daylight has disappeared, while the narration provides context for rulers and periods associated with Karnak.
The Monuments Behind the Story
Karnak was one of the main religious centers of ancient Thebes, the city now represented by modern Luxor. The complex contains the Great Hypostyle Hall with its 134 papyrus-form columns, along with obelisks, pylons, sanctuaries, smaller temples, and the Sacred Lake.
Thebes grew into a major center from the Middle Kingdom onward, while many of the monuments visible in Luxor today belong to the New Kingdom. Karnak is also included within the UNESCO-listed Ancient Thebes and its Necropolis property, giving the night presentation a setting directly connected with the history being narrated.
Plan for Walking After Dark
Because the show involves moving through an archaeological complex at night, footwear suitable for walking is a practical choice. It is also worth allowing enough time before the performance to complete entry procedures without having to rush into the program after it has started.
Karnak is on Luxor’s East Bank. A daytime visit and the Sound & Light presentation offer different ways of seeing the same site: daylight is better suited to examining carvings and architectural details closely, while the evening program uses controlled lighting and narration to connect those structures with the story of ancient Thebes.
Tickets and Time in Your Evening
The Sound & Light program has its own ticketing through the show operator. The listed admission information is US$20 adult; US$11 child (6–12).
Allow additional time around the performance for arrival and leaving the temple complex.
Language Tip
When choosing between performances, confirm both the listed time and narration language. Two shows on the same evening may not use the same language arrangement.
