Chartres en Lumières turns central Chartres into a walk-through night display rather than a single show in one square. The 2026 edition uses 21 illuminated sites, including three projections around Chartres Cathedral, churches, civic buildings, bridges, washhouses, and locations beside the Eure River. Because the lights begin with nightfall, the useful start time changes as daylight hours shorten through the season.

Current Timing

From April 11, 2026 through January 3, 2027, Daily, the schedule begins at sunset.

How Chartres en Lumières Times Work

There is no single start time that applies unchanged from spring through winter. The illuminations switch on after dark, so an April or summer visit naturally begins later than an evening near the end of the season. The listed schedule should therefore be treated as the practical planning time for the date of the visit rather than as one permanent nightly hour.

Today’s listed performances have ended. The scheduled times were 5:33 PM.

The official calendar also notes that start and finish times are indicative. For most visitors, that matters mainly when deciding how early to arrive. Reaching the historic center before the listed start provides time to choose a first projection and avoid using the opening minutes of the evening to navigate between sites.

Timing Tip

Do not plan the evening around seeing all 21 locations begin at one exact moment. Chartres en Lumières works better as a self-paced route, with projections encountered one after another across the city center and lower town.

The show is scheduled from April 11, 2026 through January 3, 2027.

What Runs During the Evening

The illuminated route reaches well beyond the cathedral. The 2026 program includes the Musée des Beaux-Arts façade, Théâtre de Chartres, Hôtel Montescot, Collégiale Saint-André, Saint-Pierre and Saint-Aignan churches, several bridges and washhouses along the Eure, Place Billard, Eurélium, and other façades in the historic center and lower town.

The Cathedral Has Several Separate Displays

Chartres Cathedral is not represented by one projection alone. The Royal Portal, north portal, and south portal each form separate illuminated locations. At the Royal Portal, two scenographies are presented in alternation: BLEU – Mirror of Men and the Sky and Nave of Light. That makes the cathedral area a natural place to spend more time rather than treating it as a single stop.

Individual projections are generally short enough to encounter as part of a walking circuit. For example, the official pages list five-minute presentations at locations such as the Théâtre de Chartres, while the Royal Portal program alternates between longer sequences. There is no need to choose one fixed seat and remain there for the entire evening.

The Lower Town Changes the Character of the Route

Several installations follow the Eure through the lower town, using bridges, riverside structures, and historic washhouses as projection surfaces. These stops are physically separate from the cathedral cluster, so seeing them adds walking time but also reveals a different part of Chartres after dark.

Planning a Route Through Chartres

The illuminated sites are spread through the heart of Chartres, around the cathedral, along the boulevards, and beside the Eure. The official interactive map is especially useful here because it shows the display locations together with practical points such as parking areas, public restrooms, the tourist office, and the Petit Chart’Train departure point.

A compact visit can stay around the cathedral and nearby central sites. A longer evening can continue downhill toward Saint-André and the river installations. Since the event is designed for independent walking, there is no prescribed order and no requirement to complete every location in one night.

Viewing Tip

Some river displays are intended to be viewed from the opposite bank or a nearby street rather than from directly beside the illuminated structure. The official map identifies these viewing positions for locations such as Pont Bouju and Lavoir Foulerie.

The show is free to watch.

The freedom to move between projections makes arrival time more flexible than it would be for a seated performance. Starting near the cathedral works well for a shorter visit, while anyone intending to include the Eure-side displays should allow enough of the evening for the walk between upper and lower Chartres.
